The Top 100 Songs of 1966: #10-1

In 1966, Jan Berry crashed his Corvette into a parked truck on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles, suffering brain damage.  It cut Berry's touring down considerably, he was in poor health for the rest of his life and he died in 2004.  Meanwhile 26-year-old Jack Nicklaus won both the Masters and the British Open.

Fifty years later, these are the 10 songs from 1966 that are the most popular:

#10:

(You're My) Soul And Inspiration
Righteous Brothers

This blue-eyed soul duo followed up the 1965 #1 classic "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" with this #1 in 1966.

#9:
Eleanor Rigby
Beatles

This song only peaked at #11 at the time it was released, but its phenomenal continued sales and airplay have shown it should have been much stronger. (No original video available)

#8:

You Can't Hurry Love
Supremes

The Supremes land two big hits in the Top 10 for the year.

#7:

Strangers In The Night
Frank Sinatra

This #1 smash was a comeback for Frank Sinatra, his first chart-topper in 11 years.

#6:

Monday, Monday
the Mamas and the Papas

Here's one of the timeless songs of the year, with a song about a subject (Monday) that everyone can relate to.

#5:

Paperback Writer
Beatles

At #5, the first #1 for the Beatles that wasn't about love, but rather authors of paperback novels.

#4:

When A Man Loves A Woman
Percy Sledge

At #4, the first #1 song to be recorded in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, which became a favorite recording spot.

#3:

You Keep Me Hangin' On
Supremes

This group not only scored five #1 songs in a row; they came back for a second group of four in a row, including this one.

#2:

Good Vibrations
Beach Boys

Up until Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody", this was the most-expensive single every produced.  Genius Brian Wilson put his heart and soul into this one, and the Beach Boys come in at #2.

#1:

Cherish
Association

Although they only scored 11 hits in the decade, the Association is responsible for three of The Top Songs of the '60s*, including this all-time smash.
